Meet Maria

Influence

Studying art at university in Japan provided her with a strong work ethic; simplicity, dedication, perfection and perseverance is what she strives to capture, in a craft that is not simple and at times unpredictable. Her work often reflects her Japanese influence in colours, textures, patterns and details found in nature.

Style

Her current work is primarily functional wares reflecting nature, simplicity and attention to detail.  She strives to create a balanced relationship between form, function, and surface decoration and enjoys the ritualistic experience of using handmade ceramics with good food and good company.

She creates utilitarian, hand thrown and slab constructed vessels fired to stoneware temperatures (1220-1280c) for durability and encourages her customers to use her wares every day.

Achievements

Maria completed a Bachelor of Visual Art and shortly after was fortunate to be awarded a Japanese Government Scholarship to study traditional Japanese pottery at Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music.

Maria is also a qualified Primary Art Specialist teacher who along with the training in education finds it rewarding to share her love of ceramic art with students both young and old.  Their enthusiasm and ‘give it a go’ approach often renews her own practice and interest in such a challenging medium.
